I've had many "bento box" lunch specials in my day, but have a hard time keeping track of all of them. The objective of this mini project is to determine where are the best places to order bento boxes from in the Tribeca/SoHo/West Village area. First up is Sushi Samba 7!
Contestant: Sushi Samba 7
Location: 87 7 Avenue South, West Village
Order: Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box
Cost: $14 not including tax, tip (delivery)
Contents: 1 salmon filet, mixed greens salad with dressing, 6-piece tuna roll, miso soup, white rice
Good: Salmon was cooked to perfection. The skin was crispy and sweet. There was nothing fishy about it. Salad was delicious (no iceberg lettuce in sight) and I enjoyed the smoky flavors in the miso soup.
Bad: Miso soup was somewhat plain (no seaweed), tuna roll was an afterthought (but nonetheless fresh).
Verdict: B+. I would probably order this again, but more likely to just go to Sushi Samba and have a sit down lunch. The ingredients and preparation are definitely better than your average Japanese take-out place. While there was definitely enough food to keep me full for the rest of the day, I kind of wanted more variety. The salmon could have greatly benefited from a bed of greens or rice.
